We all live within our own isolated worlds, however successful people understand that expanding one’s outlook helps create a larger view of the possibilities available to them. The more people, places, and experiences we can include in our envisioning, the better. Broadening our horizon doesn’t have to be as complicated as planning a trip to some distant land. It can be as simple as networking with others or retreating to a relaxing environment.
Just by expanding our visual horizon, we can extend our range of thinking beyond the parameters of our normal thought processes. When we get stuck in a rut, the creative juices tend to dry up. That’s because left to our limited environment, we fail to see the possibilities. We can’t expand our vision without first expanding our view beyond just our self. Our vision needs to include the larger context of the world around us.
Bob Buford did this after creating a successful cable company. He wanted to do more than just make money, so he developed Halftime as a way to help people invest the second half of their life by helping others through charitable work. In order to expand its influence, he wrote a book about this organization. Today, Halftime engages thousands of successful people in philanthropic efforts around the world.
As it was with Bob, expanding your vision requires an awareness of the needs not just within your own community, but also in the communities around you. Just by using your current skills and abilities, you can make a broader impact. Halftime helps successful homebuilders in the U.S. build housing units in Africa, and it facilitates doctors practicing medicine where no hospitals exist.
The more we expand the scope and understanding of what’s around us, the better we can identify a grander vision that can positively influence even more people. That’s the definition of multiplying success—continually helping others to succeed.
“All successful people are big dreamers. They imagine what their future could be, ideal in every respect, and then they work every day toward their distant vision, that goal or purpose.” ~ Brian Tracy
