When you’re feeling like the weight of the world is sitting right on top of your shoulders, when things become too overwhelming and it seems like your challenges are never-ending, consider the universe around you. How magnificent its creator must be to envision it! Allow your cares to drift into the eternity in which we exist, and discover God’s infinite ability to carry you through your current state of affairs.
Ponder the fact that we are standing on a planet that’s revolving at a speed of 900 miles an hour, and orbiting the sun at ninety miles a second. All that we can perceive on this planet, plus all the stars that we can see, move a million miles a day. Our galaxy alone contains a hundred billion stars, measuring 100,000 light years side to side. Our planet measures 30,000 light years from its galactic central point, which means we go around every 200 billion years. To top it off, our galaxy is only one-millionth of this spectacular expanding universe. Some estimates peg that expansion at twelve million miles a minute.
Our Milky Way galaxy is rotating at 225 kilometers per second, and darting through the universe at an estimated 305 kilometers per second. These figures added together mean that you’re racing through space at around 530 kilometers, or 330 miles per second. So in one minute, you’ve traveled almost 20,000 kilometers, or more than 12,000 miles. A beam of light you see from an exploding star is only an illusion of one that actually happened millions of years ago.
If you could imagine yourself poised on the edge of a black hole (that immeasurable non-material energy that represents almost eighty-percent of our universe), you would be suspended indefinitely, without movement, neither losing energy nor gaining it; and, in this static state time would be standing still—and you would be living in the realm of eternity!
Now just consider how fleeting your worries are in the endless scheme of time, how infinitesimal your problems are compared to the vast expanse of the universe in which you live. This is your world. You are so important to live in the midst of it with boundless possibilities! You are part of a wondrous universe—as its most amazing creation!
“That deep emotional conviction of the presence of a superior reasoning power, which is revealed in the incomprehensible universe, forms my idea of God.” ~ Albert Einstein
